How Athlete Select works
We are an equipment matching service, not a store. Here is exactly how a recommendation is produced and how we make money.
1. You describe the athlete
Team/competition age group, age, height, weight, experience, level of play, strength, hitter profile, and how their current bat feels. Nothing that identifies a child is ever requested: no names, no date of birth, no photos.
2. Legality rules are applied
Season-versioned USSSA rules (1.15 BPF stamp, barrel diameter, permitted drops) plus the age-group drop restriction for your team's division — currently -8 or heavier for 13U and -5 or heavier for 14U — filter the catalog before anything else happens. An illegal bat can never be recommended. Local leagues and individual tournaments can be stricter, so confirm with your organisation before you buy.
3. A deterministic fit heuristic (v1) ranks the options
The same answers always produce the same result. Our sizing model is a documented v1 heuristic built from multi-source manufacturer sizing guidance combined with your player's measurements and how their current bat actually feels — it is a well-reasoned starting point, not a laboratory measurement. Fit percentages express how closely a bat matches those rules; they are not validated science, and when confidence is low we tell you to swing the bat in person before buying. Inputs are physical and behavioural only. Commission, sponsorship, retailer payouts and click revenue are not inputs to the engine and never will be.
4. You get four honest outcomes
Best Match (pure fit), Best Value (fit per dollar), Best Deal Today (lowest total cost for a size-correct bat), and Keep Current Bat — which we return whenever replacing the bat you own would not help your player.
5. Price intelligence is applied last
Prices are captured against one exact purchasable variant — family, model year, certification, drop, length and SKU. A price is never shown against a size it was not observed for. Offers that fail verification or age out are hidden by default.
6. Monetization is separated by design
At launch, retailer links may be affiliate links. Affiliate relationships cannot change which bat is recommended, its fit score, or the order of a price table sorted by total cost. Read the affiliate disclosure.
Methodology and disclaimer
Every recommendation is produced from three things: the information you give us about your athlete, verified product specifications for one exact purchasable bat (brand, family, model year, certification, drop and length), and the performance evidence we can actually attribute to that exact size.
Evidence is ranked. Manufacturer specifications come first, independent testing next, specialist retailers for corroboration, and owner/community reports carry the least weight. Where sources disagree we keep the conflict and say so. Where nothing credible exists, the attribute stays unknown and scores neutrally — we do not fill gaps with assumptions, and an undocumented bat is never penalised for it.
Sizing is a documented v1 heuristic, not a laboratory measurement. It is a well-reasoned starting point built from multi-source sizing guidance, your athlete's measurements and how their current bat actually feels. Player match reflects fit only: price, popularity, review counts, brand prestige, model-year newness, commission, sponsorship and retailer relationships are worth exactly zero points.
Every athlete is different. Two players with identical height, weight and age can genuinely prefer different bats, and swing feel is partly personal. Treat the recommendation as an informed shortlist: when you can, have your athlete swing the bat in person — at a store, a cage or a teammate's bat bag — before you buy. Confirm legality with your league or tournament organisation, because local rules can be stricter than USSSA.
Beta status
The bat catalog, the deterministic sizing and legality engine and the database are live, and the matcher is publicly usable, but the catalog is deliberately incomplete: a bat is only listed once its exact model year, certification, drop and length come from a manufacturer source, so some families still show no sizes. No retailer pricing feed is connected, so Best Value and Best Deal Today are marked unavailable rather than estimated. Feedback you send on a result is reviewed by us and never feeds back into sizing, legality, ranking or evidence.
