Drop 10 vs Drop 8 Baseball Bats
A -8 is two ounces heavier than a -10 at the same length. Two ounces sounds trivial and is not — it changes swing effort for a young hitter.

Short answer
Stay at -10 while bat speed and barrel control are still developing. Move to -8 when the athlete is handling their current bat comfortably, has gained real strength, and the current bat is starting to feel too light — or when their division requires it. USSSA 13U requires -8 or heavier, so at 13U the choice is made for you.
What the numbers mean
Drop is length in inches minus weight in ounces. Same length, different drop, different weight:
| Length | -10 weight | -8 weight |
|---|---|---|
| 29" | 19 oz | 21 oz |
| 30" | 20 oz | 22 oz |
| 31" | 21 oz | 23 oz |
| 32" | 22 oz | 24 oz |
Signs an athlete is ready for -8
- • The current bat feels too light and swings are getting long or loopy.
- • Contact quality is consistent, not occasional.
- • They pass the hold-out and barrel-control checks with the heavier bat in hand.
- • They have real seasons of competitive at-bats, not one spring of rec ball.
- • They are already using a measured -8 or heavier successfully.
Signs to stay at -10
- • Any late barrel, dropped hands or visible effort at the end of a round.
- • A first or second season of live pitching.
- • Small or light for the division.
- • Contact-first hitter whose value is timing and consistency.
Younger divisions have no drop restriction at all, so -11 and -12 are legitimate options when a -10 is genuinely too heavy — lighter is not a step backwards for a 7 or 8 year old.
What about -5 and -12?
-12 maximises bat speed for the youngest and lightest players. -5 is a step toward BBCOR feel and is required at USSSA 14U. Both are correct answers for the right athlete and wrong ones for everybody else. The full ladder is in the drop weight guide.
Common mistakes
- • Going up a drop because of a birthday.
- • Going up a drop and up an inch in the same purchase.
- • Assuming every -8 swings the same. Feel belongs to the exact model and drop.
- • Waiting until the first 13U tournament to discover the drop rule.
